About Us
The History Of The Camillus Police Department
Police department history is very interesting. In the very early days of town history, most hamlets and villages had a constable to deal with police problems. Later, with the expansion of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police, many calls were handled by these agencies. They still help with special problems in the Towns.
In 1948, The Village hired Frank Pugh of Warners as the first official police officer. His duties were later expanded to include the Town of Camillus, which he patrolled in his own vehicle. In 1960, he left for a position in the Sheriff’s Department and was succeeded by Tom McGraw. A part-time officer, Matt Sitnik was appointed at the time to work under McGraw. In 1962, the town purchased its first patrol vehicle. On January 1, 1963, Donald O’Hara succeeded McGraw who left to work for the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Matt Sitnik left his police post later in 1963.

How do I report a non-emergency incident?
For non-emergencies, such as noise complaints, you can call the Camillus Police Department’s non-emergency line at (315)487-0102. You can also stop by the station during regular business hours.
How can I obtain a copy of a police report?
Certain records generated by the Camillus Police Department are available to the public by filing a FOIL request. Other records, like crash or incident reports, are available to certain individuals as defined by law. Please note that there is usually a nominal fee for reports. Contact the Camillus Police Department for more information.
How do I apply for a pistol permit or firearms license?
Pistol permits in Onondaga County are handled by the County Sheriff’s Office, not the Camillus Police Department. Visit the Onondaga County Sheriff’s website for application forms and instructions, or call their Pistol License Unit at (315) 435-2037.
Can I have an officer check on my house while I’m on vacation?
Yes! The Camillus Police Department offers property checks. Fill out a request form at the station or online, and our officers will periodically check your home while you’re away.
